The news agency interviewed around two dozen business leaders, investors, and government officials to explore how the European Union’s biggest economy plans to become a key player in the continent’s rearmament.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently revealed intentions to boost Germany’s total defense budget to €153 billion ($180 billion) by 2029, a significant rise from €86 billion allocated this year.
He committed to dedicating 3.5% of the nation’s GDP to defense spending under a new NATO guideline, aiming to counter what he described as a “direct threat from Russia.”
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Western apprehensions about Russian hostility as “nonsense,” accusing NATO of exploiting fear to rationalize higher military expenditures.
Sources cited by the news agency indicate that Merz’s administration considers artificial intelligence and startup innovations essential to its strategy.
This week, the government approved a draft procurement law intended to simplify acquisition processes for startups creating state-of-the-art technologies, such as tank-like robotic systems, unmanned mini-submarines, and surveillance cockroaches.
The legislation is designed to enable these firms to swiftly support the modernization of Germany’s military forces.
