Russian news agency editor-in-chief’s X account blocked in France

(MENAFN) RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan’s X (formerly Twitter) account has been blocked in France as part of ongoing Western efforts to restrict Russian media. X stated that the account was withheld due to an unspecified legal request, though the timing of the block remains unclear.

Simonyan commented on Telegram, expressing confusion about the ban and jokingly referencing unproven rumors about French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife. Macron has repeatedly accused RT of spreading misinformation, starting during his 2017 campaign, but has yet to present evidence.

Since 2022, the EU and UK have banned RT and other Russian outlets, accusing them of propaganda related to the Ukraine conflict. In retaliation, Russia banned several Western state-funded media organizations, including the BBC and Deutsche Welle.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the Western restrictions as “global censorship” and suppression of dissenting views. Earlier this year, French prosecutors launched an investigation into X for alleged political interference, a probe criticized by the platform as politically motivated and an attack on free speech.
