Kremlin Warns Against EU’s Sanctions on Russian Oil
This caution was voiced by Dmitry Peskov, a representative of the Kremlin, in reaction to ongoing discussions in Brussels regarding a possible revision of the current oil price restriction enforced as part of EU sanctions.
Peskov emphasized, “Such actions undoubtedly do not contribute to the stabilization of international energy and oil markets,” during a briefing held on Wednesday.
His statement reflected concern over the potential consequences of altering the sanctions framework.
On Tuesday, the European Commission introduced its 18th package of punitive measures against Russia. These proposed sanctions aim at Russia’s energy sector, logistical infrastructure, and financial systems.
Among the provisions is a suggestion to decrease the maximum permitted oil price from USD60 to USD45 per barrel.
The plan also includes a prohibition on future usage of the Nord Stream gas conduits, a curb on importing refined products made from Russian-origin crude oil, and the listing of 77 ships that the EU alleges are utilized to bypass existing restrictions.
The enforcement of these measures would require unanimous agreement from all 27 EU nations.
Peskov stated that Russian authorities are vigilantly observing the European Union’s developments.
He assured that Moscow will implement countermeasures that most effectively safeguard its national priorities if any adjustments to the oil price cap are made.
